Misty Mornings

Dresden Plate Blog Hop hosted by Island Batik is in its second week. The collection I received to use in this blog hop is Misty Mornings. Misty Mornings is a dreamy new collection from Island Batik and you will soon see it gracing the shelves in local quilt shops. I could go on and on about how pretty and fun this collection is but I think it speaks for itself. To locate a shop by collection click here to be taken to the Island Batik website.

Products featured in this post were provided to me free of charge. As an Island Batik Ambassador I receive two shipments a year filled with beautiful Island Batik fabric. Included in these shipments are products from industry partners Hobbs Batting, Schmetz Needles, Deb Tucker Studio 180 Designs, Aurifil Thread and new this year, Oliso Irons.

The challenge

This months challenge was to create a Dresden Plate quilt using Misty Mornings. It was really easy to use a sampling of each of the 20 fabrics in my quilt. For my quilt I chose to use the lightest shades from the collection and the light coordinating fabric (Fondant) for the background.

The spokes in the above block is appliqued to the background fabric using a fusible and finished with a blanket stitching using Aurifil 40wt thread. I made 8 of these.

Then I made a more traditional Dresden Plate block for the center. For this block I traced the blades onto a fusible web. After fusing the shapes to the fabric I used my ruler to add and trim a 1/4″ seam allowance all the way around each blade.

Next, I folded the blades in half to mark the center and I stitched across the tops to form my faux prairie points. The paper was then removed, the new seam lined up with the center fold and the points fused into place. This method kept my points sharp and the fusible helped to stabilize the blades while sewing them together. And, since the fusible was already attached it made appliqueing the Dresden Plate to the background block easy peasy.

For a light airy finish, I used Hobbs Thermore® Batting. I chose this particular batting because (per Hobbs website), “You can confidently machine, hand wash or dry clean your project. It may be quilted up to 9” apart and will not shrink.” This was important because I wanted to quilt pebbles all over my quilt and it gave me a little control over shrinkage. Even though Thermore is a low loft batting it really defined the pebbles and added so much texture to the finished quilt.

The above and below photo show the finish in natural lighting, and I LOVE it! Of course it was windy and difficult to get a flat photo. I really wish I’d added some star blocks, then I could have called this quilt Galaxy.
