Flying Geese-For the birds
Welcome to my stop in For the Birds Blog Hop Challenge. When Joan announced the hop I knew I had to join because 1. I love flying geese 2. the Island Batik Create for a Cause June challenge was to make a charity quilt using the Deb Tucker Studio 180 tool I received, Wing Clipper 1 and 3. I wanted to share a lesser known charity with you all, Sleep in Heavenly Peace and Quilts Across America.
Thank you Joan for the opportunity to spread the word. You can find Joan blogging at MooseStash Quilting, she blogs, host’s other great hops throughout the year and also provides a chuckle or two during your visit. Here you will find the schedule with links for the entire hop.
The products featured in this post were provided to me free of charge. As an Island Batik Ambassador I receive two shipments a year filled with beautiful Island Batik fabric. Included in these shipments are products from industry partners Hobbs Batting, Schmetz Needles, Deb Tucker Studio 180 Designs, Aurifil Thread and new this year, Oliso Irons.
Per the Island Batik challenge guidelines.
All children deserve a safe, comfortable place to lay their heads. Across the US, too many boys and girls go without a bed—or even a pillow—to sleep on. These children end up sleeping on couches, blankets, and even floors. This can affect their happiness and health. That’s where Sleep in Heavenly Peace comes in. A group of volunteers dedicated to building, assembling, and delivering top-notch bunk beds to children and families in need.
Quilts Across America is a program that relies on the generosity of quilters everywhere to provide a quilt with each bed that is delivered. Quilts Across America was initiated by Studio 180 Design and Tucker University in July 2023. Off the floor, Into a Bed, and Under a Quilt.
Flying geese
If you know me at all you know that I love flying geese and they are my favorite block to manipulate, to stretch or shrink. When I received Wing Clipper 1 tool in the January IBA box I was so happy because I also love trying new methods for making flying geese. Deb Tucker Studio 18 Designs offers cutting tools designed for specific quilt blocks in multiple sizes. For most you will also find a video tutorial.
The only real plan I had when I started making the quilt was to use the Island Batik Solids, I wanted to make a quilt that would be suitable for a boy. The gray solid will be great for hiding soil if the quilt is used on the floor. The biggest complaints I hear from quilters is, “there aren’t many designs for boys, or I can’t find boy fabric. Any design is suitable for a boy and solids are a great choice.
I started by making a lot of flying geese from 5 solids, then i decided to add the yellow center with kites. For the kites I used the Wing Clipper 1 for the top, and the V Block Tool for the bottom. The Tucker Trimmer 1 is great for HST’s but it also worked well for the QST ribbons under the kites.
Flying geese also make the really cool pinwheel blocks.
The minimum size requirement for the challenge was 50″ x 75″ and I was falling short on the length. I had just enough fabric left to add the 9 patch blocks and a 2 1/2″ strip of each color within the quilt for binding.
My opinion of the Wing Clipper 1 after making all these flying geese, you can’t go wrong. The theory behind Deb Tucker Studio 180 Designs tools is, make the block larger and trim it down to size. You’re going to square you blocks up anyway after making them and the Wing Clipper is an amazing tool to add to your collection.

Wow that is an amazing quilt! I make quilts to donate to Project Linus and so does my friend. She has sons, so mostly makes quilts for boys (older boys) and does a lot of bright colored skateboard quilts. I tend to make smaller quilts (mostly girls) for newborns-elementary age, because I can only manage to quilt smaller quilts with my domestic machines. Larger quilts hurt my shoulders and frustrate me too much, lol! Even doing a QAYG, it eventually gets too large to finish by machine for me.
I envy that you can quilt on your domestic at all, I tried one time and it was a disaster. Thank you for stopping by and your kind words.
Your quilt is really pretty. The quilting looks great as well.
Thank you

You never cease to amaze me on your ability to make the best looking flying geese and how you easily incorporate them in your quilts. You win the prize on that! I bounced over to read about the projects you listed. Very interesting and such a worthy cause. Your quilt is beautiful and would be a total treasure for anyone who snuggles in it.
