Frosted Foliage
Products featured in this post were provided to me free of charge. As an Island Batik Ambassador I receive two shipments a year filled with beautiful Island Batik fabric. Included in these shipments are products from industry partners Hobbs Batting, Schmetz Needles, Deb Tucker Studio 180 Designs, Aurifil Thread, Oliso Irons, Funky Friends Factory, ByAnnie, and AccuQuilt.
This months challenge the Island Batik Ambassadors were asked to make a Crazy Quilting using Aurifil Thread and the new collection Frosted Foliage. The 4 small spools of thread are what Aurifil sent to me for the challenge, and I pulled out a few more. Frosted Foliage is shipping to shops now.

Crazy stitching
For my blocks, I stitched diamonds with hexi blocks for the center. 36 of them and each finished roughly at 12″ tall. Some of the decorative stitches were from my embroidery machine and some from Bernette B77. It was so much fun (kind of addictive) searching my machines and stitching out the decorative stitches. So much fun that I am digitizing crazy blocks for a pattern.

Once all of my diamonds were finished I googled “diamond english paper piecing” and decided on this layout. I know, crazy right?

I couldn’t imagine trying to bind all of those points. Since my theme was hexi’s I trimmed the quilt down to a hexi. In the end I decided to add just a plain finishing stitch around the outside instead of binding. Now why didn’t I think of that before trimming it down?
The colors in Frosted Foliage are gorgeous, although initially I thought the lime green really didn’t belong to the collection. Turns out, the lime green adds a nice contrast. It reminds me of the sun peaking through the trees and shining down on the grass.

Loki, as usual joined in the photo shoot. He loves getting his picture taken and claiming all the quilts as his own.
Aurifil
I ended up pulling a few more colors from my thread stash and finished off the small spools. To give you an idea of stitch amount, a single bobbin would finish off 1 diamond. A couple of the diamonds used more than that.

Hobbs Batting

Hobbs Heirloom Fusible Cotton Batting was perfect for this challenge. Fused to the backside of the quilt top kept everything from shifting while adding the decorative stitches.
Schmetz Needles
Every year Schmetz sends the Ambassadors a selection of needles to use throughout the year. My go to needle is the Microtex (Sharp) Chrome Needles.
Machines Used
Oliso MP3 Pro Project Iron was perfect for pressing all the seams open and flat.

Hi Denise, what a lovely quilt! You’re correct, the lime green does add a spark to the whole quilt. That’s a crazy use of thread! Congrats on a gorgeous finish 🙂
