What better way to start the Summer than a quilt full of blooms. Welcome to my latest Sew Along Bloomers.
Please don’t let the combo scare you away though because you truly have options. In my patterns I like to encourage creativity (make it your own) and Bloomers will be no different.
Keep reading for all the details.

About Bloomers
Bloomers combines patchwork, fusible applique, and foundation paper piecing for a fun customized finish.
For those who do not applique you can still follow along for a great finished quilt. The hexi blocks can be paper pieced, or for your convenience I have included templates for cutting patches for patchwork blocks.
The paper pieced hexi blocks are beginner friendly, I even have a 3 part tutorial on paper piecing with strips. This is a great series for everyone because it teaches you how to measure patches for your fabric and piecing the blocks, all while preventing fabric waste.

Fabric
The 2 quilts above are just a couple of options for Bloomers. The quilt on the left in shown with 2 background fabrics, and the quilt on the right is shown with a single background fabric. When you purchase your fabric please keep this in mind for your desired finish. My background fabric is white and Rice, both from Island Batik.

The colored fabric I chose is a FQ bundle of an older Island Batik collection Floralicious that I have been saving for a special project and I’ve decided this is it. I recommend that you select an assortment of bright colors that you like, they will become your hexi and flower fabric. A fat quarter bundle or 10″ square pre-cut pack of your favorite fabric is an excellent option because both includes a selection of coordinating fabric. Of course these will leave you with scraps, and the FQ bundle will leave enough you could make a second Bloomers quilt.
In addition to fabric, you will need a fusible webbing such as Wonder Under, or Heat N Bond. The ability to print the templates and applique layout diagrams is a must, general sewing supplies, matching threads, and an Add a Quarter ruler (will be helpful but not required).

Download
Download the fabric chart here, start collecting your fabrics, then come back here on June 30th for the first release. This should give you enough time for those will order their fabric.

A download link for the current block will be provided in a blog post every 2 weeks following the schedule above (included in your download). You may also visit the main Bloomers SAL page here (located in the top menu, hover over Sew Along) where all post links will be added.
Free for a limited time
I’m sorry I have to spell this out.
Every 2 weeks beginning June 30, 2025 I will release a new block. When the new block is posted the previous block will no longer be a free download, instead it will be available for purchase. No exceptions. If you have not signed up for my Newsletter now would be a great time.
When you click the link to download the current block you will see the image below. Click add to cart and follow the instructions. If there is a dollar amount shown other than $0.00, the new block has been released and it is no longer available free. It will then be up to you if you purchase.

Although the SAL is completely free when the download schedule is followed, I ask you consider a donation when downloading the final release on Dec. 1st if you have enjoyed the SAL. To do so, on the image above replace the $0.00 with a “Pay what you want” amount, an amount you feel is fair or what you can afford.
I look forward to the next 6 months and what you create. If you would like to share your progress you can do so in my weekly Put your foot down linky party every Thursday on my blog.
