Welcome to the 3rd round of the Saint Paddy sew along. By now your center medallion (shamrocks) should be completed as well as the inside border. If you haven’t removed the papers from your shamrock block’s now is a good time. As your quilt grows the paper will become unruly and get in your way.

In today’s release you will make 4 hst’s and 44 three quarter triangles. There are two piecing option, traditional patchwork or FPP, cutting instruction is available for both options.

Linkup

Last week there were no progress photos shared in the linkup. You will find this week’s linkup at the bottom of this post and I invite you to share your photos. If you need help linking up let me know in the comment section.

FPP diagram

In the diagram (also in download) above the red arrows indicate the size of strips you will use to cover each patch. For FPP there is no need to cut the fabric for each individual patch when you follow the cutting and piecing instructions in my videos. You can find the videos here, although the patterns in the videos are for different quilts, the method remains the same.

Cutting strips for this round are:

For patch 1 cut 2 3/4″ strips x WOF.

For patch 2 and 3 cut 3 3/4″ x WOF. Also used for the hst blocks,

Cut your strips as you go. Everyone’s comfort level is different while paper piecing. I turn my strips to fit the shape as tightly as possible and still leave a little to be trimmed when adding the next patch. Others may leave over half an inch around the patches, so it is best to cut your strips as needed.

Cutting dimensions for traditional patchwork are provided in the download on pages 7 and 8.

Round 3 complete

Join blocks to form your border strips. For this round I used 2 different fabrics from Island Batik “The Grove” collection.

Join your strips as instructed in the download (see Attaching Pieced Strips to Border below). However, if you find an alternate layout for the blocks that you prefer, make it your own.

Attaching pieced Block strips to borders

After piecing your hst’s and three quarter square triangle strips:

  1. Find and mark the center of each strip. I find it easier to fold your strip in half and press a seam.
  2. Match the strip center and the center of all four sides of your quilt. Pin or glue baste in place.
  3. Match strip ends to quilt corners. Pin or glue baste in place.
  4. Pin or glue baste between corners and centers and join using 1/4″ seam.

It is important to follow the steps above. Some fabrics have more stretch than others and we are attaching stabilized blocks that have no stretch to the un-stabilized inside border.

Add middle border strips

Round 2 included instructions for the middle border, it is now time to add this border. Please follow directions above for Attaching Pieced Block Strips To Borders above.
