Butterfly Garden-Log Cabin Blog Hop
Island Batik Challenge
It’s that time again, the first Island Batik blog hop of the year with a lot of beautiful new fabric collections and Ambassador designs to go with them. The fabric I received is Woodstock by Kathy Engle for Canton Village Quilt Works. It is so bright and cheerful, and all the green fabric was screaming flowers flower flowers. After creating the Log Cabin Tree of Life quilt I had to design something that would keep with my high log cabin standards, lol.
Put your foot down linky party at the bottom of the post.
The products featured in this post were provided to me free of charge. As an Island Batik Ambassador I receive two shipments a year filled with beautiful Island Batik fabric. Included in these shipments are products from industry partners Hobbs Batting, Schmetz Needles, Deb Tucker Studio 180 Designs, Aurifil Thread and new this year, Oliso Irons.
A couple of the sku’s in this collection were not used in this project, but plan to use them in next months project Aren’t they gorgeous?
Log Cabin blocks
All but 4 of the log cabin blocks finish at 7″, the other 4 finish at 6″ x 7″. The photo below shows the background blocks made from Fondant and Muslin, These are both from the Island Batik Foundations and are available throughout the year. Fondant is so soft and pretty with a cool design, I’ve had several people tell me how much they love it.
The design has a yard light, or you could call it a bird house. The yard light/birdhouse finishes at 14″ and the best part, you have 2 design options for this. You’ll see the other option in the finished quilt below. Oh, that’s right, I have a pattern available. Read on.
For piecing I used an Aurifil neutral 50wt with a Schmetz Microtex (Sharp) Needle. Both are very generous industry partners. For quilting I used Aurifil Forty3 that I purchase from MaryMackMadeMine.
There are 4 different flower blocks and a butterfly block in my quilt. When printing the templates I forgot to check the box in printer settings that says “scaling”, to no scaling. So…I had to print and make more blocks. Oh I really didn’t mind making additional blocks that I can use in another design.
Every butterfly garden needs sun to grow. For the sun blocks I used the Yellow Solid from the Foundations Collection and a yellow print from a previous collection.
That darned birdhouse/yard light is still escaping you. I just love how the tulip is sitting in a bed of leaves, perhaps calling it a rose bud is more fitting. Butterflies dancing in the garden makes me dream of spring, more so with the snow, cold and wind that rushed in Saturday.
Quilting with Heirloom® Premium Cotton
Hobbs has a batting for everyone. Blends, Cotton, Wool, and PolyDown. For Butterfly Garden I used the Heirloom Premium Cotton, my favorite.
We went out Saturday to take photos of the finish. Sometimes snow days provide the best lighting for photos of colorful quilts, that wasn’t the case this time. Sunday we went out to try again and the wind was blowing and the sun shining bright.
Sunday I stitched some free standing lace butterflies and added them to the finished quilt. The thread I used is Aurifil 50wt and the fsl pattern came from Embroidery Library.
In the shade on Sunday, the house was blocking most of the wind so we were able to get a straight on photo.
This was such a fun project to design and sew. A huge thank you to Island Batik and all the industry partners. The only item I don’t think I have mentioned was the new Oliso Smart Iron I received in my IBA box 1. It was a pleasant surprise to see the new plate and the way the cord attaches to the iron.

Previous log cabin quilts
This was the first log cabin quilt I ever made, also for an Island Batik challenge. I miss my Enzo so much!
That quilt led to another log cabin tree of life quilt, perhaps for another challenge?
This is the quilt from my sew along, and maybe the last log cabin tree of life quilt I will make. All of the fabrics used in this quilt were from the Island Batik Foundations. Log Cabin Tree of LIfe is available in my Etsy and Payhip shops.

What a fabulous quilt! I love the way you made a flower, sun and birdhouse out of the log cabin blocks. The addition of the embroidery butterflies is perfect too. Congratulations on another stunning quilt!
