Welcome back to the Garden Song Sew Along! Today, we are moving on to Section 3, and I’m so excited to share this week’s block designs with you.

Welcome to Section 3!
This section brings a lovely mix of whimsical garden elements to life—including mushrooms, a friendly snail, a colorful butterfly, a blooming flower, and a tall leafy stem!
Section Specifications & Sizing
- Finished Section Size: 12″ tall × 18″ wide
- Block Sizes:
- Mushroom, Snail, Butterfly, and Flower blocks: 6″ × 6″ finished
- Tall Leaf block: 6″ × 12″ finished
Background Fabric Options
You have flexibility with how you prepare your background fabrics before applying your appliqué pieces:
- Solid Background: Use a single piece of fabric cut to size for each individual block area.
- Pieced / Patchwork Background: Piece smaller fabric strips or squares into a patchwork block first, creating a scrappy background before adding your appliqué motifs on top!

The only requirement is that your completed section measures 12½” tall × 18½” wide, including seam allowance.
Depending on where you’d like to position the tall leaf block, here are two layout options for arranging Section 3:
In this layout, the four 6 1/2″ blocks (mushroom, snail, butterfly, flower) are arranged in a 2 x 2 grid on the left, with the 6 1/2″ × 12 1/2″ tall leaf block placed on the right side.
Note: If you prefer a simpler design, the tall leaf block can also be omitted entirely to create more negative space! Make it your own!
Option 2: Leaf Stem in the Center
In this layout, the 6″ × 12″ Tall Leaf block sits right down the middle, flanked by the Mushroom and Butterfly blocks on the left, and the Snail and Flower blocks on the right.
