round 4 of Saint paddy
Round 4 and final round of the Saint Paddy SAL, are you making progress? By now your quilt should resemble this…
The final round consist of 14 checkerboard blocks as shown in the image below. The download includes both paper templates and directions for strip piecing (patchwork) the blocks. Remove any paper that remains in the quilt back.
Saint paddy piecing
Choosing to FPP round 4 will take longer than following the strip piecing (Patchwork Only in dowload) method. However, your blocks will be more accurate and stabilized (by the paper) for adding them to the quilt top, then adding the outside border.
Using strips for foundation paper piecing (following Paper Piecing Only in download) to piece the paper templates will speed up the method since there is no additional cutting needed. See my Youtube page for tutorials.
The pages are labeled for both methods with cutting dimensions. Locate the page labeled “Paper Piecing Only” or “Patchwork Only”, depending on the piecing method you have decided on.
Making the blocks
Patchwork Only-You will need two of each sets shown in Fig 1 and Fig 2.
Patchwork Only-Next, sub-cut all of your strip sets into 2 1/2″ strips as shown in Fig 3.
For FPP and patchwork
Alternate as shown in Fig 4.
For easier handling, join 4 of these 2 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ strips to form 7 blocks as shown in Fig 5. You will need a total of 7 blocks for the top and 7 blocks for the bottom of your quilt. Join blocks and add to quilt.
Locate the sheet (or previously cut strips) marked “Outside Border” from Round 2 and add them to your quilt following directions on the sheet.
